VBAC Counseling
If you’ve had a cesarean birth and are considering a vaginal delivery, you may be a candidate for VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean). At The Ob-Gyn Center in Las Vegas, we provide expert counseling to help you understand your options and make the best decision for your health and your baby’s safety.
What Is VBAC?
VBAC stands for Vaginal Birth After Cesarean. It refers to giving birth vaginally after one or more previous C-sections. While not everyone is eligible, many women with a low-transverse uterine incision and no medical complications can safely attempt a VBAC. Counseling helps determine your candidacy and prepare for a positive, informed birth experience.
Benefits of VBAC
Choosing VBAC offers several advantages compared to a repeat cesarean:
- Shorter recovery period
- Lower risk of infection and surgical complications
- Less blood loss and faster physical healing
- Increased participation in the birth experience
- Reduced risks in future pregnancies
Your provider will help you evaluate the benefits and potential risks to make the decision that best fits your goals and health history.
Are You a Candidate for VBAC?
Your OB/GYN will carefully review your medical and surgical history to assess whether VBAC is a safe option. You may be a good candidate if you:
- Had one previous C-section with a low-transverse incision
- Have no history of uterine rupture or major complications
- Previously delivered vaginally
- Are carrying one baby in a head-down position
- Have an otherwise healthy, low-risk pregnancy
Those with a classical (vertical) uterine incision, multiple prior C-sections, or certain medical conditions may not be suitable candidates. Your provider will guide you through these considerations during counseling.
What to Expect from VBAC Counseling
VBAC counseling is a key part of prenatal care for those with a prior cesarean. During your visit, your provider will:
- Review prior surgical and delivery records
- Discuss the benefits and risks of VBAC vs. repeat cesarean
- Explain what to expect during labor and delivery
- Address your questions and concerns
- Develop a personalized birth plan focused on safety and comfort
This session ensures you’re fully informed and supported as you plan your delivery.
Understanding the Risks
While VBAC is safe for many, it carries some risks that should be discussed openly. These include:
- Uterine rupture (rare but serious)
- Need for emergency cesarean if labor stalls or complications arise
- Slightly higher infection or bleeding risk if surgery becomes necessary
At The Ob-Gyn Center, all VBACs are monitored in a hospital setting with immediate access to surgical care if needed—ensuring safety for both mother and baby.
Planning Your Delivery
If you and your provider decide VBAC is right for you, your delivery plan will include:
- Hospital birth with continuous monitoring
- Supportive care from experienced OB/GYNs and nurses
- Access to emergency surgical teams if required
- Flexible planning to ensure both safety and comfort
Our team is dedicated to providing a positive, empowering birth experience whether you deliver vaginally or by cesarean.
