What Is an Ultrasound?
An ultrasound (or sonogram) uses high-frequency sound waves to produce detailed images of internal organs and tissues. It is a safe and painless diagnostic tool used in many areas of women’s health, including:
- Confirming and dating a pregnancy
- Monitoring fetal development and movement
- Evaluating pelvic pain, bleeding, or irregular periods
- Detecting ovarian cysts, fibroids, or uterine abnormalities
- Guiding procedures such as IUD placement or biopsies
Ultrasound uses no radiation and is completely safe for both pregnant and non-pregnant patients.
Types of Ultrasound We Offer
1. Transabdominal Ultrasound
Performed over the abdomen, this scan is commonly used during pregnancy or for general pelvic imaging. It provides a broad view of the uterus, ovaries, and other pelvic structures.
2. Transvaginal Ultrasound
This imaging method uses a slim probe inserted gently into the vagina to capture more detailed views of pelvic organs. It is often used in early pregnancy or for evaluating symptoms such as abnormal bleeding or infertility.
3. Obstetric Ultrasound
Performed throughout pregnancy to track fetal growth, anatomy, position, and amniotic fluid levels. These scans may include dating scans, anatomy scans (around 20 weeks), and biophysical profiles for ongoing monitoring.
4. Gynecologic Ultrasound
Used to evaluate the uterus, ovaries, and endometrial lining. It helps diagnose fibroids, ovarian cysts, and conditions like endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
When Is an Ultrasound Recommended?
Ultrasounds may be recommended for a variety of reasons, such as:
- Confirming early pregnancy and viability
- Tracking fetal development and health
- Investigating abnormal bleeding or pelvic pain
- Monitoring existing conditions like fibroids or cysts
- Evaluating fertility and ovulation
- Assessing postmenopausal symptoms
Your OB/GYN will recommend the appropriate type of ultrasound based on your needs and stage of care.
What to Expect During Your Ultrasound
Ultrasounds are quick, comfortable, and performed in a private exam room. Depending on the type of scan:
- You may be asked to arrive with a full bladder for pelvic imaging
- A warm gel is applied to the skin or probe to ensure clear images
- The exam usually takes 15–30 minutes
- No recovery time is needed—you can resume normal activities immediately
Your provider will review the images, explain the findings, and discuss next steps right away.
