Postpartum Care
At The Ob-Gyn Center in Las Vegas, our care continues long after delivery. The postpartum period—your recovery phase after childbirth—is an essential time for both your physical healing and emotional well-being. Whether you had a vaginal birth or C-section, our team is here to help you recover safely, adjust to motherhood, and feel supported every step of the way.
What Is Postpartum Care?
Postpartum care includes the medical and emotional support you receive in the 6–12 weeks following delivery. These visits focus on your healing, mental health, and overall adjustment to life with a newborn. Your first postpartum appointment usually takes place within six weeks after delivery, though earlier visits can be scheduled if needed.
What to Expect at Your Postpartum Visit
During your appointment, your OB/GYN will check how your body is recovering and how you’re adjusting emotionally. Common areas of discussion include:
- Incision or vaginal tear recovery
- Bleeding and uterine healing
- Breastfeeding or formula feeding support
- Birth control and family planning options
- Nutrition, hydration, and sleep habits
- Mental health screening for baby blues or postpartum depression
- Intimacy and sexual health after birth
This visit is also an opportunity to share your questions or concerns and receive personalized guidance for your recovery.
Physical Recovery After Childbirth
Your body goes through significant changes after delivery, and healing takes time. We provide compassionate care and advice for:
- Vaginal bleeding and changes in discharge (lochia)
- Healing of perineal or cesarean incisions
- Breast engorgement, tenderness, or mastitis
- Hemorrhoids and constipation
- Pelvic floor discomfort or weakness
- Urinary or bowel changes
Your provider will guide you through safe pain relief options, wound care, and when it’s appropriate to resume activity or exercise.
Emotional & Mental Health Support
It’s normal to experience mood changes or emotional ups and downs after giving birth. Hormonal shifts, fatigue, and the demands of newborn care can impact how you feel. We screen for postpartum depression and anxiety and can provide:
- Education on baby blues vs. postpartum depression
- Referrals for counseling or support groups
- Medication management if appropriate
- Partner and family communication strategies
You’re not alone—seeking support is a strong and healthy choice for both you and your baby.
Breastfeeding & Infant Feeding Support
Whether you breastfeed, bottle feed, or combine both, our team offers practical, nonjudgmental support to help you feed your baby confidently. We can assist with:
- Latching and positioning techniques
- Managing soreness, engorgement, or blocked ducts
- Tracking feeding frequency and baby’s weight
- Selecting the right formula or combination feeding plan
- Returning to work and pumping schedules
Our goal is to ensure both you and your baby are thriving during this adjustment period.
Postpartum Birth Control & Family Planning
Fertility can return quickly after delivery, even before your first postpartum period. During your postpartum visit, we’ll discuss contraception options and help you choose what best fits your timeline and goals. Available methods include:
- Birth control pills, patch, or vaginal ring
- IUDs or implants
- Injections
- Condoms or other barrier methods
- Natural family planning (fertility awareness methods)
Some options, such as IUDs, can be placed before you leave the hospital.
Pelvic Floor & Sexual Health
Many women experience pelvic pressure, pain with intercourse, or bladder issues after birth. These are common but treatable concerns. We can help with:
- Referrals for pelvic floor physical therapy
- Treatment for vaginal dryness or hormonal changes
- Support for incontinence or prolapse symptoms
- Guidance on intimacy and emotional connection postpartum
When to Call Your Provider
Contact your OB/GYN immediately if you experience:
- Heavy bleeding (soaking more than one pad per hour)
- Fever or chills
- Pain, redness, or swelling at the incision site
- Breast pain, redness, or warmth with fever
- Chest pain or shortness of breath
- Severe mood changes or thoughts of self-harm
Prompt attention to these symptoms helps ensure a safe and smooth recovery.
