Genital Wart Treatments
The Ob-Gyn Center in Las Vegas offers confidential, compassionate care for genital warts. While these growths are common and typically noncancerous, treatment can help remove warts, prevent recurrence, and improve comfort and confidence.
What Are Genital Warts?
Genital warts are small, flesh-colored or gray growths that develop on the vulva, vagina, cervix, anus, or groin area. They may appear as a single bump or in clusters. These warts are caused by low-risk types of the human papillomavirus (HPV), most commonly types 6 and 11. While not linked to cancer, they are contagious and spread through skin-to-skin sexual contact.
Common Symptoms
Symptoms can vary widely. Some people have visible warts, while others have none. When present, symptoms may include:
- Small, raised, or flat growths in the genital or anal area
- Clusters of multiple warts or isolated bumps
- Itching or irritation
- Bleeding with intercourse (if warts are on the cervix)
- Emotional discomfort or self-consciousness
Even though warts may resolve on their own, treatment is recommended to prevent spreading the virus and to ease symptoms.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is typically made through a physical exam. Your provider may:
- Visually inspect the affected area
- Use a magnifying tool for closer examination
- Perform a Pap test to check for internal warts or cervical cell changes
- Recommend HPV testing as part of routine cervical cancer screening
The evaluation is discreet, respectful, and focused on your comfort and privacy.
Treatment Options
While there’s no cure for HPV itself, genital warts can be removed or managed effectively. Treatment depends on the number, size, and location of the warts.
In-Office Treatments
- Cryotherapy: Freezing warts with liquid nitrogen to destroy tissue
- Trichloroacetic acid (TCA): A chemical solution that removes wart layers
- Electrocautery or laser therapy: Used for persistent or large warts
- Surgical removal: Considered for extensive or internal cases
Prescription Treatments
- Imiquimod cream: Stimulates the immune system to fight HPV
- Podofilox solution: Destroys wart tissue (applied at home)
- Sinecatechins ointment: Green tea–based topical for external warts
- Oral medications: Such as isotretinoin or cimetidine in specific cases
Your provider will discuss which treatment fits best with your health, comfort, and lifestyle.
What to Expect After Treatment
Recovery depends on the treatment method. Some redness, mild irritation, or discomfort may occur temporarily. Most patients can resume normal activity immediately. Because HPV may remain dormant, warts can recur, especially in the first few months after treatment. Follow-up visits help monitor healing and manage recurrence if needed.
Preventing Recurrence and Transmission
To lower your risk of future outbreaks and protect your partner(s):
- Use condoms or dental dams during sex (though not fully protective)
- Avoid sexual contact during visible outbreaks
- Discuss the HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9) with your provider for prevention
- Maintain regular gynecologic exams and screenings
- Support your immune system with healthy sleep, nutrition, and stress management
In most cases, your body’s immune system can suppress HPV over time.
