Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT)
At The Ob-Gyn Center in Las Vegas, we offer Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT)—a safe and highly accurate blood test that screens for certain genetic conditions in a developing baby. Available as early as 10 weeks, NIPT provides valuable insight into your baby’s health without risk to you or your pregnancy.
What Is NIPT?
NIPT analyzes small fragments of fetal DNA that circulate in your bloodstream during pregnancy. The test screens for common chromosomal abnormalities, including:
- Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome)
- Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome)
- Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome)
- Sex chromosome conditions (such as Turner or Klinefelter syndrome)
- Fetal sex, if desired
While NIPT is a screening test—not diagnostic—it offers a clear indication of whether there’s a higher or lower likelihood of genetic conditions. Results help guide decisions about any necessary follow-up testing.
Who Should Consider NIPT?
NIPT is available to all pregnant patients, but your provider may recommend it especially if you:
- Are age 35 or older at delivery
- Have a personal or family history of genetic conditions
- Received abnormal results from earlier screenings
- Had a prior pregnancy affected by a chromosomal condition
Your OB/GYN will review your medical history and help you decide if NIPT fits your pregnancy care plan.
Benefits of NIPT
- Early testing: Can be performed as early as 10 weeks
- High accuracy: Over 99% sensitivity for Down syndrome and other trisomies
- Low risk: Requires only a simple blood draw
- Optional gender reveal: Early determination of fetal sex
- Informed decisions: Helps guide next steps in care or additional testing
What to Expect
NIPT is simple, quick, and noninvasive:
- Your provider reviews the test and obtains consent
- A routine blood sample is drawn
- The sample is sent to a certified lab for analysis
- Results are typically available within 7–10 days
When results are ready, your provider will review them with you and discuss any next steps or additional testing that may be appropriate.
Understanding Your Results
- Low-risk result: Suggests a low likelihood of the tested conditions (though not a guarantee of a healthy baby).
- High-risk result: Suggests an increased chance of a chromosomal condition. Your provider may recommend diagnostic testing, such as chorionic villus sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis, for confirmation.
NIPT complements other prenatal screenings like ultrasounds and is part of a comprehensive approach to pregnancy care.
What If My Results Are Abnormal?
If your results show a higher risk for a genetic condition, your provider will discuss follow-up options such as:
- Genetic counseling
- Targeted or detailed ultrasound
- Diagnostic testing (CVS or amniocentesis)
- Specialized care planning and support resources
Our team ensures you receive the guidance and reassurance you need to make informed choices with confidence.
